I love to take day trips. The idea of exploring a new place always excites me weather it is around the corner or on a different continent. If I haven’t had a chance to travel for a while I love to plan a local day trip but I also love to day trip when I’m actually on vacation. I know this may seem like a totally bizarre concept but it really isn’t. Let me explain how a little planning and willingness to explore can turn a wonderful vacation into a truly memorable one.
My mother and I have taken many vacations together this one began on the beautiful island of Jersey. Initially the plan was to spend our time relaxing and gently discovering all that Jersey has to offer -Jersey does have so much to offer. On further consideration after a little research I realized that a day trip to St. Malo, France was easily a possibility. I decided to surprise my Mom and purchase ferry tickets so that we could spend a day in the beautiful historic town of St.Malo.
I think my mother would agree this turned out to be the best day trip ever!
After a wonderful breakfast at The Radisson Blu we headed out to catch an early ferry to take the 80 minute journey to St.Malo. The actual ferry ride was pleasant and no pun intended –smooth sailing. I did upgrade to the Ocean Club which was well worth the extra for comfortable seating and refreshments. The service was wonderful and the whole experience very pleasant. After what seemed like a very short time we arrived in the port of St.Malo. The transition through customs and,the short walk from the ferry to the old city takes no time at all. The weather was beautiful and we began our adventure in France for a day!
Our first stop was to take a walk around the ramparts of the old town. The weather was perfect and the views beautiful . We loved this liesurly walk with views of the port, the old town and further along, the beach.
Next Stop Crepes...........
Next we headed to the old town and the cobbled streets in search of one of my most favorite food –crepes. We were not disappointed. Enjoying this delicious creation along with a honey cocktail while watching the world meander on by was one of our most relaxing times. Brittany, the area where St.Malo is situated ,is famous for crepes and seafood-while you are there be sure to savor both.
Cathedral St. Vincent’s
This is a Roman Catholic Cathedral which is quite stunning and has quite a history. It dates back to the 15th century but you can still attend Mass here. This was on my list of “must see” and so we wandered in its general direction enjoying sights and sounds of the beautiful town along the way.
Walk This Way............
Meandering through the old cobbled stone streets was so fascinating. We didn’t make an itinerary as we wanted our day to really be an adventure. We wandered stopping whenever something caught our eye. I actually found the perfect fascinator which I ended up wearing at my daughter’s wedding.
St.Malo really is a beautiful town to explore .There is tremendous history here and so many pirate tales to be told. If you ever find yourself in Brittany be sure to spend a few days here. All that walking makes for some hungry day trippers.
After a wonderful meal of mussels and more white wine we decided to take another stroll around town before walking back to catch our ferry back to Jersey.
