Gennadi, GreeceGennadi is a Greek village in the Sothern region of Rhodes. The village has a population of about 700 people and it is a “tourist town “in the making. That is a town that is trying to grown into something more than it is right now. It truly does has the makings of a great place to base your holiday in Rhodes. You will find Gennadi 40 miles south of Rhodes City and the International airport, 15 miles south of Lindos which means it is easy to drive or get a bus to any of the sights you want to visit. Read on to find out why I fell in love with this small Greek town…………… Go for the Beach...........The reason I fell in love with this place was the calm, tranquil beach. Yes, it’s a pebble beach but that in itself has many advantages. The water of the Aegean Sea is crystal clear and so very refreshing. The beach here is typically quiet with a few Italian, Greek and German tourists soaking up the sun. I loved that you can rent an umbrella and 2 lounges for 7 euro for the whole day. Even better you can stroll the 20 yards from your lounger to the outdoor restaurant for lunch or light refreshments then stroll back for a nap. I spent two days at this beach and it was probably the most relaxing days I had all year. Loved it!!! Go for the Fish Resturants........There are two fish restaurants situated right on the beach that have clearly been around for a while. Both offer a two course fresh fish meal for 15 euros, both offer beach loungers and relaxing atmospheres but I fell in love with Klemis Taverna. The food here was fabulous and the service wonderful. Our waitress explained that the octupus is hung for 2-3 days to "soften" the tenticles. The Klemis specializes in grilled octupus and fresh fish. The Town Center...........The town of Gennadi is small but it has all you need for a relaxing stay. There is a tiny super-market that sells everything from coffee to sunscreen. The bakery next door bakes some delicious treats fresh each morning. There is a green grocer and a specialty shop called Yia Yia’s- Grandmas Treats. - Here you can find all manner of treats including local honey, delectable dips and yummy pasta. There are a number of local restaurants to choose from , our favorite was Zorbas as the food was fresh and the service impeccable. What I loved about the town was the quiet, laid back feel. We spent many an hour sipping coffee watching the world meander by or drinking wine and listening to the local children play hide and seek…………so relaxing. Out and About........Zorbas -A must in GennadiWe opted to eat at this new restaurant a few nights. The place was authentic and spotless. The food was good and the service impeccable. I loved that you can sit outside and watch old black and white movies projected on the white wall across the way. Everything we tried here was very good and the prices were reasonable. Thebeet salad I tried was the freshest I have ever had the fried cheese was to die for. The house wine was good as well as the on the house zambouca. If you are in Gennadi be sure to try this place. Where to Stay..........There are plenty of choices for places to stay including a number of Airbnb’s . My Mom booked our stay through Thomas Cook, a Britsh travel company. The Nostos is a two star hotel very conveniently located 2 minutes walk from the town center and 5 minutes walk from the beach. This is a small, clean hotel with all the basics. Rooms on the third floor have sea views . The service here is very good. The rooms themselves are small and basic and the beds are not very comfortable. The pool has a poolside bar with outdoor TV. For the price we paid this is excellent value however if I were to return I would opt for an AirBnB. So if you find yourself in Rhodes consider Gennadi making this beautiful Greek village your base or at the very least stop by for an afternoon at the beach with all it has to offer..........enjoy!! Happy travels. www.teachertakesatrip.com |
