Why Alpine...................

The Brewery...............www.bigbendbrewing.com/brewery
The Big Bend Brewing Company was established in Alpine in 2012 and it is well worth a visit; in fact, it was our first stop as we settled into town. It is situated just on the outskirts of town and has a tap room. We were greeted by friendly bar staff and introduced to some pretty good beers. I loved the light, pilsner, Tejas and Gene tried a pretty strong darker beer. We both agreed the beer was solid and the choices extensive. The atmosphere is casual, and we pulled up a seat on a wooden bench and met some of the locals.

If you live in Texas driving is a huge part of your everyday life. If you chose to travel anywhere in Texas road trips are a given. My road trips became all the more interesting because of a little Ap called Roadside America. It’s not the best Ap but it entertains me and I get to lead my sweet husband off on some pretty unsuspecting adventures- not all of which he appreciates. Here are my top ten Roadside America sights! Enjoy!

1. This place is literally in the middle of nowhere and you really do have to hunt to find it- no pun intended! What is even more curious is that it almost appears to be in someone’s back yard. The sculptures are amazing and certainly worth considering. When I contemplate our visit here I am still in awe of the sheer beauty in such an obscure place.

As you may or may not have surmised by now I am a practicing catholic, when I travel I love to go to Mass is new churches .Whether you are catholic or not, the Painted Churches of Texas are most definitely worth discovering. These churches are not only quite stunning they rich in  history and are a real part of the Texas culture. The churches are also in some of the most beautiful countryside Texas has to offer. We explored them on one of my birthday trips in the spring. The bloom of the wildflowers along the highway bears no comparison……………….

Shiner

Shiner boasts one of the most beautiful painted churches in Texas, Saints Cyril and Methodius Church. We have visited many times as our family not only loves to see the church but of course Shiner Brewery is a must when we are in town.

Washington State Olympic Penninsula

This past summer Gene and I embarked on one of our longest road trips to date. We Flew into Seattle then took the ferry to Poulsbo where we began exploring the Olympic Peninsula. This was one of our most favorite trips in the states. The scenery in this part of the world is breathtaking, the people friendly and the towns quirky- we spent 10 days exploring and had a blast. Here are some of the highlights of that trip.

Poulsbro was a great place to position ourselves for a few nights. The town is a great place to explore with plenty of restaurants, shops and a beautiful marina. We were lucky enough to be there for the Fourth of July celebrations with amazing fireworks. If you ae in this area be sure to check out the incredible bakery ………………..delicious!!!

#KeysRoadTrip......Part II

After some great stops along the way we headed to Key Largo for our last night in the Keys. Next Stop Hampton Inn, Key Largo.

Picture
Although this hotel had great reviews we just weren’t expecting this Hampton Inn to offer so much, if you are in Key Largo stay here.
One of the things we had hoped to do while on the Keys was kayak .Unfortunately because of Irma all the kayak businesses were in the process of re-establishing due to so much damage. Even the state parks were partially closed and there was not a kayak to be had. We were pleasantly surprise to find that the Hampton had its own private beach with kayaks for rent and so much more. We spent a few hours kayaking then lazing on the beach watching the manatee that came so very close and then we  watched a most beautiful sunset before we headed out for dinner. The next morning we were totally entertained by the enormous lizards who clearly know the exact times for breakfast. This turned out to be a really great place to end our time on the Keys.

Florida Keys Roadtrip

On November 3rd, 2017 we celebrated 30 years of marriage. We had determined that a short road trip was our only option as we were on a tight schedule in the middle of the school year. My plans for the trip began as soon as we returned from our summer road trip through Washington and Oregon. But as the saying goes “the best laid plans”- certainly need to be flexible when you travel!
Hurricane Irma with all its force hit the Keys in September; we all saw the  utter devastation that was left in its wake. After little debate we decided to continue with our plans given the fact our tourist dollars could do more good there than any place else we might choose.
It was a good decision. Our 4 day road trip was incredible. Yes, we saw unbelievable beauty juxtaposed with unthinkable damage but wherever we went we were welcomed and thanked and we witnessed true resilience and strength. Conch strength!

Overnight in Hollywood Beach

Picture
Hollywood,Beach FL
We stayed a block from the boardwalk so although we arrived at 9:00pm we were still able to walk on the boardwalk and have dinner and drinks watching the waves. The next morning we were up for an early start but we first took a walk on the boardwalk. I fell in love with this beach and the boardwalk. No doubt it was the time of year but the weather was beautiful and the beach quiet. Locals were out and about bike riding or walking dogs’. Although our time there was very short I loved it and would love to really explore the area another time but for now the Keys were calling us.
